Introduction

Cattle farming is a challenging business that requires constant monitoring and management, especially for private farms with large herds.Hopefully recent years, advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technology have made it easier for farmers to monitor their cattle efficiently and effectively.  This case study focuses on a private farm that had a herd of 1000 cows, and the development of an IoT cattle monitoring system to improve their health, productivity and reduce cattle loses.

Challenge

The farm faced several challenges in monitoring their cattle, including the difficulty of tracking the behavior of such a large herd and the time-consuming nature of manual monitoring. The farmer also wanted to improve the health and productivity of the herd, but was unable to identify potential health problems early enough. The early disease identification is the most critical to keep cattle in good condition. Therefore to detect any changes in cattle behaviour is crutial for veterinarian.

Solution

The overall solution consist of the following components:
- A sensors attached to the cows to track their behavior, activity levels, feeding behavior and body parameters.
- Each sensor communicate with a central computer over gateways and Bluetooth Low Energy protocol.
- Farm separated on areas depends on the farm process. And each area has a gateway.
- Central server collect all data obtained from cow's sensors. Process it in according with farming algorithms.
- Based on status of every cow a system may provide:

- Health alerts: The system can provide alerts if a cow's behavior deviates from its normal pattern, which could indicate a potential health problem. For example, if a cow is lying down for an extended period    or not eating as much as usual, the system can send an alert to notify the veterinary of a potential issue.

- Feeding recommendations: By analyzing the feeding behavior of the cows, the system can provide recommendations on the optimal feeding schedule and the amount of feed needed or move cow to another area.
This can help the farmer optimize the feeding and management of the herd, leading to increased productivity and profitability.

- Activity level monitoring: The system can track the activity levels of the cows and provide recommendations on the amount of exercise they need. This can help the farmer ensure that the cows are getting enough exercise and reduce the risk of health problems such as lameness, metabolic disorders, respiratory infections, etc.

- Reproduction management: The system can track the reproductive behavior of the cows and provide recommendations on the optimal breeding schedule. This can help the farmer improve the efficiency of their breeding program and increase the number   of healthy calves born each year.

- Environment monitoring: The system can monitor the temperature and humidity levels in the barn or grazing area and provide recommendations on the optimal conditions for the cows. This can help the farmer create a more comfortable and healthy environment for their herd.

- Statistic. Collected data during time helps to analyze and understand farm process much deeply and helps to improve results.

- The entire management of the system is done through a web-based interface.

Results

After integrating an IoT cattle monitoring system on a farm, there are several positive outcomes that benefitboth the farmer. Here are results:- Improved animal health and welfare: An IoT cattle monitoring system helped farm owner to ensure that his cowsare healthy and comfortable by providing real-time data on their behavior and health. This helped farmer to identifyareas where improvements are needed and make adjustments to improve the overall welfare of the herd.- Reduced healthcare costs:

By detecting potential health problems early and taking appropriate action, farmersreduced the needed for expensive veterinary treatments, medications, and other healthcare costs.

- Lower labor costs: An IoT cattle monitoring system automated many routine tasks such as monitoring of the cow's health and behavior and reduced effors of the veterinary.- Reduced feed waste: By monitoring the feeding behavior of the cows, farmers optimized his feeding program andreduce feed waste, leading to cost savings.

- Higher milk yields: By monitoring the feeding and activity behavior of the cows, farmers optimized their nutrition program andincrease milk production, leading to higher milk yields and increased income.

- Better herd management: With an IoT cattle monitoring system, farmer collected and analyzed large amounts of data onthe behavior and health of his herd. This provided valuable insights that helped farmer to make informed decisions abouttheir management practices, leading to improved outcomes and increased income.

Customer background

The  farm was a large cattle operation with 1000 cows, located in a rural area. The farmer had been in the industry for many years and was looking for ways to improve the health, productivity of the herd, reduce operation costs and increase income.

Technologies

The IoT cattle monitoring system utilized a range of technologies, including sensors, wireless communication, and data analysis software. The sensors used were attached to the cows and collected data on their behavior, activity levels, and feeding behavior. The data was transmitted wirelessly to a central computer, where it was analyzed in real-time using advanced algorithms. The farmer was able to access the data remotely via a web-based interface, allowing them to monitor the health and productivity of the herd from anywhere.
